I get this message when I start up my computer and it won't close when I click on the X. Any suggestions how to get rid of it? It says "the exception unknown software exception (0x0eedfade) occurred in the application at location 0x7c812a5b". I have no idea what this means.

  1. Some program that was running had an error that the designer didn't anticipate.

Think about when this message first popped up - did you just install some new software just before that?

Also look at the message carefully - it may give you a file name that's a clue to which program is bombing.  It may say something like something.exe , or something.dll.  Then, search for that file on your computer.  Suppose the complaint was about sav.exe.  After searching my computer, maybe I would see that this is in a folder called Symantec Antivirus (I'm just making this up, don't take the names literally).  Then I would try to reinstall or update that program.

Finally, this is happening when your computer is booting up, so it must be a program or service that runs automatically.  See if you can find a technically inclined friend to help you disable, one by one, the programs that automatically start from your Startup folder, and if that's not it, then to go into the registry and disable, one by one, services and programs that run automatically at startup.  Once you know what the culprit is, you can either get rid of that program, or uninstall and reinstall it cleanly.

A third possibility is that you have a virus of some kind, but I assume that you have a virus scanner running.

  2. Some files are corrupt.
