Question:

How do I get rid of an icon on my desktop after the program has been deleted?

I downloaded one of those 1-hour free games, and at the end of the game I uninstalled the program. Unfortunately, the icon is still on the desktop, and when I try to delete it (both by right-click-delete, and dragging it to the recycle bin) I get an error that says:

"Could not find this item. Verify item's location and try again."

How do I get rid of it now?

  1. Right click & then delete.

  2. That's not supposed to happen. Your computer is probably infested with viruses or such. Get an anti-virus program like AVG Free Edition (http://free.avg.com/) or something.

Then scan your computer and try to get rid of the viruses. If they can't be removed, reinstall your operating system.

    That's unusual, good luck!

  3. Try to restart your system and if it's still there, press the icon and click the button on your keyboard-"delete". This should work for you.

  4. First re-boot your PC to "unlock" the icon if it's maybe still "in use".

Then click on it once (no double click) and when highlighted press the "Del" key on your keyboard. Answer yes to the pop-up question and it should delete. The only other option is that it maybe malware that safeguard itself against complete removal. Something like Spybot Search and Destroy, available for free at http://www.spybot.com/index2.html will help
