How do I get rid of foxes in the backyard?

Just moved into a new house and the back garden is in a state, there's a fox den in the back and we've seen foxes walking about out there even in the daytime. we've got a cat and we can't let her out at night so is there a humane way of telling them to p*** off?

There are many ways of detering foxes from your garden on the market from electrical devices which emit noise at a frequency we can't hear to chemicals which emit pungent smells. These do tend to have an effect on cats too though. One word of reassurance foxes will very rarely attack cats. The number of urban foxes is huge but they find far easier meals in the dustbin rather than attack a fiesty and well armed cat. The best way to get rid of them is to literally evict them by preventing them accessing the den or destroying it (make sure the occupants have been evicted and that there are no cubs first). If the garden is in the state your describe it is probably your best bet to totally renevate the back garden. The activity will send the fox/s away and then you can deal with the mess and the den to make sure they don't return.

I know it sounds strange but a man's urine around the garden gives the foxes the smell of another dominant male and they will be reluctant to use that area.
