How do I get rid of mold on carpet?

We had some water leakage on our basement carpet and a strong-smelling mold has appeared. What is the best way to get rid of this? Thanks if you can help!

only thing that kills mold is bleach......if you have continued water leakage, don't even put carpet.....get an area rug if needed....you must kill that mold though, because it will take over your entire basement and make you very sick

Either get new carpet or try a mild bleach solution mixed with water.

I'd get a new carpet.

Unfortunately, you will most likely need to tear up the old carpet and lay down a new one.  The mold will live underneath the carpet, as well as in the fibers of the rug.  Not only is this foul smelling and unattractive, this poses a definite health hazard, as mold is dangerous to be breathing in.  

That being said, the only way to kill a mold fungus is with a bleach.

you can't....................... you need to get rid of that part of the carpet before it makes you sick......... you could possibley replace a section.............. a carpet installer ca seam the carpet and you'll never know it's pieced in just by looking.......... if it is soaked into the floor boards, you may need to cover the boards with some white spray paint so that the smell doesn't come back.............

I REALLY SUGGEST THAT YOU HAVE THE CARPET REMOVED BECAUSE THE MOLD AND BE VERY HARM FULL AND MAKE YOU AND YOUR FAMILY SICK OR EVEN KILL. MAYBE YOU SHOULD STICK TO WOOD OR TILE FLOORING AROUND WATER.
