Question:

How do I get rid of mosquitos that have been breeding in a bucket of water beside my house?

The bucket is actually my recycling bin which was left outside by some dim-wit that lives with me and I went to empty it today and found it was filled with water, obviously from being left out in the rain. When I began to remove the cans, etc, so I could empty the water, some adult mosquitos began to emerge from the cans and bottles and stuff in the bin. I immediately dropped everything, ran to put on bug spray and went into the house. I need to know what the best way is to kill off all the adult mosquitos which are already in the bin and once i've done that, how do I kill the rest of the growing young mosquitos that are in the water that collected at the bottom of the bin? Is there a spray? a chemical? Should I just tip the bin over and run? I don't know what to do, but there is probably a proper way to deal with the problem. Also, I know that mosquitos use stagnant water to breed, and all that stuff, but now I don't know how to deal w/ them. Any help would be great! Thanks!!! :-)

  1. Dump all of the water out so that it can dry and kill the larva. Spray yardguard in the morning to kill and chase away misquitos.

  2. Drill holes into the bin and flatten every cans that you recycle to avoid water and bugs from going inside, rinse all the cans out and bottles as well to rid of sugar and other food that attracts bugs, not only you will get rid of mosquitoes but you will also have more room in the bin.

  3. dump the bucket out clean it up and your all set, get a new bucket with a lid for your recycles so you wont get any water in it for the future and your all set the mosquitos once you clean and empty it should all just go away they lost there home. Then maybe get a new recycling bin at the store with a lid, I use large tote box's with lids and keep them closed all the time to avoid the rain/snow going into them and haven't had any problems with mosquitos good luck :)

  4. Buy a bug spray that doesn't contain DEET, which is a harmful chemical. Spray it around the area. Use a personal bug repellant to avoid being bitten.

Pour oil into the water where the mozzies are, this would create a thin film over the surface that would prevent them from breeding. The best way is just to get rid of any stagnant water surface. If there are open water sources like bins or cans, cover the open mouths with Clingfilm so the bugs can't get in.

  5. pour some bleach into the water, swish and dump.  That will kill the larva.  Drill holes in the can to let the water out in the future.

Without the water around, the adults won't be inclined to hand around.  But maybe one of the mosiquito coils or candles will encourage them to be off.
