Question:

How do I get rid of snails in my tank? Without there being any chance of harming my fish.?

About 7 weeks ago I noticed 2 snails in my aquarium, which I guess must have come from a plant, and I got rid of them, but I guess there were more. I left for camp after that so I had no control. My fish were taken care of, but not the snails. I got back yesterday, and today I did a nice water change, and took out at least 30 snails, but I know I have more. I want to get rid of ALL of them before they multiply again, but I don't want to use a chemical that could harm my fish unless it's a must. I tried putting in some lettuce and cucumber, by none of the snails went to it. What do I do? How should I get rid of them?

Thanks a lot.

  1. buy like 2 gold fish and then put them in there

  2. you can buy a liquid to go in the water that will not harm your water or your fish in anyway and it will get rid of your snail troubles.

i would also advise you to wash your plants thoroughly each time you purchase new ones so that the snails get washed off etc.

if you inquire about the liquid i suggested at your local aquatic centre i am sure they will be able to help you out and advise you further.

i hope i have helped you with your question.

  3. Put Yoyo Loaches in your tank, they will eat your snails.

    Best of luck!

  4. That depends on the type of snails.  If they are trumpet snails (the cone looking ones) you should just do your best to pick them out because they reduce the chances of anaerobic decomposition.  If you leave the light off for about a day they will surface and you can pick them out.  Or you could wait until its about to rain and they will surface.  If they are pond snails or rams horn snails you could just squish them and your fish will eat them.  But if you really really want to get rid of them without hurting the fish.  you could place the fish in a bucket or "hospital tank" (which you should have anyway) then put the tank and gravel outside for about a day or two and the little buggers will dehydrate and any eggs on the gravel will suffer the same fate.  Also, if you have tropical fish you should not put any goldfish in your tank because they are a cold water fish and since your tank is at about 80 degrees it is an unsuitable environment for the goldfish and it will raise the chances for disease that will undoubtedly spread to your prized pets.

  5. lucky, i was trying to get snails to live in my tank but the other fish, especially crayfish just ate themn when they were babies
