How do I get rid of these nasty GNATS?!?!?

I live in North Carolina and it is sooo hot right now! I am frustrated because there are gnats in my house and it is driving me nuts!!! I am a neat freak and my house is always clean... so why are they everywhere?! They mainly are in the kitchen and around my cats food and water. Every once in a while you will see one fly by your face too. How do I get rid of them?!

I read another persons answer about putting a cup with wine/vinegar and dish soap- but I can't put that around my cat because he will definitely knock it over... anymore suggestions?

I have the central air on too... so its not like my house is humid either... is there a nest somewhere or something?! I am getting so grossed out and there isn't really anything else for me to clean! HELP!!!

  1. Occasionally pour bleach in all your drains specially the ones that you don't use very often. Dilute a little dish soap in the water you use for potted plants or use insect spray around your plants. Other than that, the vinegar in a bowl trick is supposed to help. Happy gnat hunting!

  2. They could be nesting somewhere and yah you have to find the nest.

But also it sounds like they are going for the water so remove cat's food and water and put cat on schedule for eating drinking.

If you have house plants you might want to remove those for a while I read that you can dry them out by not watering but that will kill the larvae.

    Clean under sink

Clean the tray under your fridge....

I think the fog thing will help .... Do you have screens on windows and doors?  Because they could be coming in from outside... so you might have to spray around.

Diatomaceous Earth might be something useful around back yard and back porch and will nto hurt cat.

  3. the bleach in all drains is the best way to go, these pesky little fellows lay eggs in standing water, like sewers and drains. if your home has a crawl space, put lime under the house on the dirt to dry it out, will also kill bugs

  4. Most likely these are fruit flies and not gnats.

The vinegar need not be where they are most concentrated.  Try it on a counter top

Get a pint canning jar or mayo jar.  Make a cone of paper like a funnel - small hole about 1/2 inch across and the large end wider than the jar mouth.

put a little vinegar/wine in the jar and set the paper funnel into the jar.  Make sure that there is space between the surface of the fluid and the bottom of the cone.

This creates a trap from which the buggers cannot escape.

It is the best, most foolproof method

even set it atop the fridge or somewhere the cat does not go.  In a couple weeks, no more gnats
