Question:

How do I get rid of these trees?

We bought an old house that had been neglected for some time. There are "trees" (not full size) that are growing around the backyard, especially around the fence. Mostly they just look like large weeds, about as tall as me, but they are very strong and tough, with roots that go very deep. How can I get rid of them myself, without paying somebody to do it?

  1. Well, you start just clipping the little branches and work yourself to larger branches. Cut them all to small size so you can bag them. Than you work youself to a branch saw, then to an ax and a shovel to digout the roots. If the roots are too large and stompy, you rent a stomp grinder.

  2. They sound like overgrown bushes. Get a good pair of loppers and cut them as close to the ground as possible or use a weed whacker with a saw blade on it and cut them down. Maybe they are a flowering bush that you could prune and have flowering for next year.

  3. Since it sounds as if you've not established the greenery yet I'd go to a home center and purchase a container of vegetation killer, place in a pump sprayer and spray those weeds/bushes/mini-trees and let the chemical take care of the work.  You'll have to follow up with some cutting afterward but it Will be far easier to deal with when the bushes are on their 'death bed'.
