How do I get rust out of a cars gas tank?

I have a 65 Mustang that has rust in the gas tank clogging the fuel filter.

  1. if this was me id replace the fuel tank because it will be hard to get the rust out to begin with id think  


  2. It's best to replace the gas tank and blow out all the lines.

  3. Drain the fuel out of the tank first.  Then drop the tank.  Fill the tank with running water (from a garden hose preferably).  All loose rust should flow out.  That should take care of the majority of the problem.  If the problem persist, just replace the stock fuel tank with a Fuel Cell.  It will be Cheaper and easier to find than a direct replacement, or cutting and welding on the old one.

  4. Check with a local radiator shop they can clean the rust out of it and line it so it wont rust again.Check the price as it may be cheaper to buy a new tank.  You can try to clean it yourself and line it but it wont be as  successful,,,,ujn
