Question:

How do I get separation of my hips and shoulders in the golf swing?

I think I identified the problem of my slicing. I am a mid to high handicapper with a consistent slice or an occasional pull. I initially was trying to fix my downswing. My hips and shdlrs open up on my first move resulting in a slice. Now, I realize - I do the same thing on the backdwing. The shdrs and hips move together. I have a bad back that is probabaly making this move worse.

But, how do I fix it. I was thinking a brace on the right leg wd help restrict the hip, allowing the

shdrs to go back further and separate. But, the downswing will be trickier to get that separation/hips first then the shoulders.

Any suggestions would be appreciated?

  1. The " forward press " is usually the action which starts the backswing after which the arms and hands take over to bring the club to the top of the swing.  At this point the wrists have broken and the club shaft should be parallel with the intended target line. The path to the top of the backswing created a swing plane which you now want to follow back through the impact area., finishing high with the belt buckle facing the target. Your torso will turn more than your hips which is a natural separation of the shoulders. The secret is to make the whole procedure as smooth as possible with everything working in unison. Don't emphasize any one phase of the swing over the other.

  2. IF YOU REMEMBER, BOB MURPHY SAID "YOU DON'T HIT NOTHING ON THE BACKSWING" IF YOU TAKE YOUR TIME AND NOT TRY TO RIP IT YOU WILL BE HALF WAY HOME... SQUARE IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN LONG... TRY TWO HIT YOUR DRIVER 210 INSTEAD OF 275 AND YOU WILL FIND MORE FAIRWAYS, WHO CARES IF YOU HIT 5-IRON WHEN OTHERS HIT 8-IRONS... IT'S WHERE THE BALL ENDS UP...

    "HIT 'EM STRAIGHT"

  3. I remember Sam Snead once writing that he initiated his swing with a slight move of the hip toward the target. That apparently got the hip moving first, which then pulled the rest of the body behind it.
