How do I get something out of a sink drain?

I dropped a part of my necklace down the drain by accident. (Yes, stupid, I know) Not the chain, just the decoration bit.

Anyway how would I go about getting it out of the drain? Or do I have to take the whole sink apart?

I can see it the drain if I look down there with a flashlight. So far I have tried using a stick to get it out but that's not really working. What else could I try to get it out?

  1. Just take the p trap off(if plastic its hand tight, if metal use a wrench)

  2. try a bit of putty or tape on the end of the stick to catch it? Or the children's clay stuff?

if you can't get it out this way, you will have to unscrew the J trap and take the little piece out of there then get the J trap back in nice and snug so it doesn't leak.

J trap is just the one piece that goes down and then back up. easy to unscrew the two connections then get the thing back together. No need to take the whole plumbing out.

When messing with contacts, jewelry andother stuff in the bathroom we all ought to put a cloth in the sink to catch this stuff on. It would save us all a lot of aggravation. I've done my fair share of dunking stuff down the drains too.

  3. If it is made of metal you can use a mechanic magnet,   if not take the sink trap apart...

  4. there are four-pronged claw devices sold at hardware stores to get things out of drains

  5. try using a wire hanger, its just sitting in the elbow of the pipe below the sink ;) GL!

  6. one suggestion is, depending on the quality of the item, i would consider if you could get it out with a magnet... if it is pure and isnt magnatized i would take paprt the drain under the sink- no need to take the whole thing apart, therefore not risking poking the thing down furthur. however, if it is exremely of some value, get a professional.
