Question:

How do I get started as a travel agent?

I absolutely love to travel, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to get paid for it. I suppose the next best thing would be to become a travel agent. At least then I would be selling something I love. But everywhere I've looked so far requires you to have travel agent experience already. Where do I get that? I just graduated in May with a BA in Public Relations. There are no jobs in PR right now anywhere near me. Or anywhere at all that doesnt require 5 years experience too. Again, where to get experience when no one will hire you without????

  1. Do a travel course to give you a better chance of getting a job.

  2. I hear you.  My degree is in theatre for all the good it's doing me now.

If you are serious about wanting to get paid to travel watch the presentations at http://www.flybymetravel.com (click on the pink buttons on the left)  There's no experience necessary.  You can learn as you go.  It took me about 2 months of research and 10 minutes of signing up to get started.

  3. apply for ticket counter for any airline that has opening. They probably would train you, and take it from there. I would try learning the airport code. Go to gov travel site to get familiar with travel rules and regulations.

  4. There is a good info at

I got into travel because my government j.o.b. (just over broke) wasn't cutting it.  Whatever route you take, get as much training as you can.  The more knowledge have the more money you will make.  You have to have the ability to sell travel and get repeat customers.  Travel is a very competitive business.  While it only took me a few minutes to get started, it will take me a life time to learn everything.

Additionally, keep this in mind.  If you have a home based travel business you not only enjoy the commisions and bonuses, but the tax deductions. A few examples: when you drive for business related purposes, it is currently 50.5 cents a mile. On July 1, it goes up to 58.5 a mile. 99 percent of the time people will regular jobs don't get this perk and they drive the most.  You also get tax deductions when eating out on business, office supplies, internet service, training, cell phone and more. There are some people who may not like to read this because it is the truth.  However, as some say, the truth will set you free.
