How do I get started in a career with wild animals?

How do I find work dealing with travel and wild animals around the world. I'm going to school and love working with animals and have since as long as I can remember. I love learning new things about them and learning to understand and help them. Could someone maybe help me make up my mind, I love it all, marine, land, large, dangerous, loving...

The only thing I would rather stay away from is snakes and spiders, before you get me wrong, I'm not afraid I've just never been that interested in that general area of animal life...

Advice, classes I should take, internships, careers, or anything would be great!!!

  1. A degree in Zoology will open up many doors in this career area. If you're still in school, I would suggest you focus primarily on science, particularly Biology. However, it will most likely be a long while before you will be able to travel around the world dealing with different animals in different scenarios. What you appear to primarily want to do is conservation work, for this, you will need to eventually undertake a PhD in a particular area of conservation or animal research and have a lot of experience.

It's a very competitive area of study, but the first thing you'll need to do is get a degree in Zoology, this will set you nicely on the path towards conservation, or whatever you choose to do.

  2. Try volunteering at a zoo.

  3. You will want to focus on your biology and zoology classes. You will want to try and get your B.S. Degree at the very least.

Finding a local Zoo to volunteer at will help you make a lot of choices in the future. Do you want to work with Raptors, Cats, Hooved Stock etc...

You can also figure out if you want to be a veterinarian, Keeper, advocate, etc.. Many Zoo's have awesome resources (Other keepers, Their Vet's etc who may mentor you.)

    Good luck!
