How do I get the image on my TV to fill the entire screen?

I have a 42" Toshiba. After the cable set up our HD box, the picture was awesome and took up the whole screen (except for commercials where they weren't high def and my non-high def channels). I got an HDMI cable today and I tried to use it and it didn't work. So I unplugged it and went back to my components. When I plugged my components back in and turned the TV back on, the image on my TV was much smaller and centered in the middle of the screen. The TV is setup for 16x9. I can't seem to find any settings to change the resolution on my Charter cable box. No one at the cable company seems to have any ideas for me. I don't want to "stretch" the image or "zoom" because that distorts the image and it wasn't necessary for me to do that just a few hours ago. My guess is this is a setting on the cable box that needs to be adjusted but I have no clue how to do that. Someone help me! I want to love my TV again!

  1. What channel were you watching and what was on?  Some networks, like NBC, CBS and other local stations don't broadcast in HD 24/7, some shows are recorded/broadcasted in SD and just displayed over the HD channel, all SD broadcasts are in 4:3, therefore giving you black or gray bars on the left and right sides of the screen, try changing channels and see if another channel comes in full screen

Also, if you have component and coax connected to the televison, make sure you are using your component input, the problem could be you are viewing it using your tuner, therefore causing the image to be messed up

  2. look on your remote for a pics shap
