I live on a sailboat and have trouble with little black bugs in my rice. I store the rice in tupperware containers so the bugs must be in the rice when I buy it. How do I get rid of them? I tried bay leaf but that did not work.

  1. Throw out your rice and buy a new bag.  You don't want to eat infested rice.  Make sure you get air tight containers and not cheap "tupperware".

  2. I would try buying another brand and storing them the same way.

Could be that they are already in the rice when you buy it, like you said..

I have a hard time seeing how they can get through a tupperware container..

    (unless it's that cheap "tupperware")

  3. I worked as a cook while working my way through college in Hawaii (40 years ago!). One of my jobs was to get the bugs out of the rice. The locals told me the only way was to "float" them out - put the rice in a large container, add a lot of water, and the bugs float to the top, where you scoop them off.

I have lived on a boat also - understand your problems!

    Good luck

    Bill

  4. place a piece of dry ice  under a papercup in the bottom of the container, then fill the container with rice, let sit until the ice is melted (about 45 minutes) without moving it or letting a breeze move across it, then place the lid tightly on the container.  This fills the container with Carbon dioxide, which kills the critters and does not affect the rice. If you put the lid on before the dry ice melts, it will cause the lid to pop back off in a short time.

  5. The eggs of those grain moths are in the product when you buy it, they are in bread, cereals, pasta's, anything with grain.  You just have to consume products before they hatch.  They are harmless and you can't see them before you eat them.  Boiling or freezing will kill most.
