You will need to fly from Melbourne to Auckland and then take an Intercity bus to Thames.  

Currently the best Air New Zealand one way ticket is $254 NZD from Melbourne to Auckland on the Air NZ website (plus taxes of $140 - eeekkkk amazing huh!!!!!) So total is $393.60 NZD oneway plus bus to Thames.

Airline ticket prices go up sharply from the 15th December.

Bus from Auckland to Thames is about $25 oneway and takes about 2 hours.

you fly to Auckland then drive to Thames its about an hour by car. You can also get a coach from Auckland which takes you into the Thames township.

best thing to do looking to fares is log on to flight centre and each day between 11 & 12 log on for their happy hour fares you may be able to get a cheap deal.
