By central Paris I mean Eiffel Tower, Louvre, Ecole Militaire, etc. I'm also staying in Paris for only 12 hours daytime, what's the best itinerary and how do I go about it? And of course, Eiffel Tower is a must!

  1. take Le Car Air France to the Hilton near Arc de Triump  (8 euros) ,from there you can walk to Trocadero, Eiffel, Champ de Mars, Ecole Militaire, Dome Church, Musee' Rodin.  Learn the subway system it's so easy to get to the Louvre (Palais Royal stop) after that.

  2. Train. It's cheap and always on time. My sister's house used to be behind the airport and we went to the city all the time. It stops not far from the Eiffel Tower.

  3. Take the train/subway.  You can look at the subway system online before you go and see exactly which trains to take. Taxis are very expensive.  There is so much to see by just walking.  With only 12 hours, you probably do not want to spend too much time in anyone place.  I suggest creating a walking tour to see the exterior of the many beautiful sites.

  4. If you're arriving in Orly, the best way is to take a cab.  It'll cost you anywhere between 25 and 40 euros.  The traffic shoudln't be too bad, either.  Not so much the case with CDG =)

If you're arriving on Air France, you could try the coaches they offer.  They offer transport between Orly, CDG, and the city itself.

Once you get into the city, you can either walk or take the metro.  The metro in Paris is quick, efficient, and much nicer than those in the States and other paris of Europe.  You can really make a lot out of 12 hours in Paris.

If it were me, I'd try to hit:

    -Eiffel Tower

    -L'arc de triomphe

    -Louvre

    -Sacre Coeur

    -Musee d'Orsay

    -Palais Royal

    -La place de la concorde

    -Le jardin du luxembourg

    -L'opera garnier

    -Le musee du petit palais

All of these sites have metro stops near them and are easily accessible by walking.  To make the most of your time, don't take a cab between them.  Also, try to stop and eat/drink at as many cafes as humanely possible.  My personal favorite is Cafe de la paix near the Opera metro stop.

  5. there is a bus from the airport that takes you into the city

also if you head to the arc de triumpe there is a bus you can pick up right next to it

where you can pay to ride and you can get on and off at all the places of interest all day

  6. take a taxi, it's about 20 min with traffic.

    cost: about 30 Euros

  7. I think the best way is to take RER C (direction Pontoise) and get off at St-Michel Notre Dame, right in the heart of Paris, outside Notre Dame Cathedral. It's 35 minutes and 3.50 €. OK, when I'm in France I walk on average 6 to 7 hours a day so if you enjoy walking too, here is my walking tour of Paris for you:

    1) Visit Notre Dame, walk along it through the park to the back of it (the back is even more beautiful). From there, walk across the bridge that leads to the smaller island: île St-Louis and walk down the main street (rue St-Louis en l'Ile) to the end and walk back along the north bank of the island.

    2) Take a little walk in the Marais district in the 4th arrondissement, north of Notre Dame, on the right bank.

    3) From there, walk to the Louvre, go to the Pyramid in the courtyard and from there walk straight west through the Tuileries Gardens as far as Place de la Concorde to see the Obelisk from the Egyptian temple of Luxor (you will be at the end of the Champs-Elysées). From there, take the métro to the Arc de Triomphe (métro line 1, exit at Charles de Gaulle Etoile) or walk up the Champs-Elysées if you feel up to it).

    4) From the Arc de Triomphe, take métro line 6 to Trocadéro, it will leave you across from the Eiffel Tower, at a distance that will allow you to take a picture of it. Then walk to the Tower. I do not recommend going to the top since you're only there one day as the line is always long and it will take too much of your precious time. From the back of the Tower you will see the Ecole Militaire but unless you have a particular interest for it, I don't think it's worth walking to.

    5) Then head back east toward the Invalides. From the Invalides head to the River and from the gorgeous Alexandre III bridge you should be able to see the Sacré-Coeur in Montmartre in the distance. Continue walking along the river, past Musée d'Orsay. Then head south down Rue du Bac and continue east again along Blvd St-Germain on the Left Bank  through the St-Germain des Prés and Latin Quarter districts. Don't miss the Roman baths and walk to the Cluny Museum behind them just to see the building at least since you won't have time to visit it (you can always take a quick peak inside, entrance is free until 6/30). Then walk up Blvd St-Michel back to your starting point.

You can also do it the other way around and do the tour clockwise, it's up to you. I don't think you'd have time to see more especially since you will have to stop to eat and rest a little at some point. If you feel lazy or the weather is not great, you can take a boat cruise along the Seine from the Pont Neuf. You'll see 3/4 of Paris's main sights in one hour. Buy a map of Paris and a little guide book before you go so you know what you are walking past and can decide what not to miss in each district.
