How do I get to the fuel pump in a 2002 Cavalier? Where is it located on the car? Under the backseat?

Do I have to drop the gas tank or can I just move the backseat? I have a full tank of gas so I hope I don't have to drop the tank.

  1. Probably in the tank under the rear seat, most cars after 2000 were.

If you frequently run out of fuel it destroys the pump. I recommend replacing with an aftermarket pump as they are better quality than original.

  2. Its in the tank. Before you go through all that trouble turn the ignition ON but dont start it. If you do this with the door open you should hear the fuel pump. On my 1995 cavalier 5 speed manual I hear a bong ish sound and a hiss at the same time. Also check you're fuel pump relay under the hood. It looks like a big fat square fuse.  Also check you're fuel filter attached the the line on the tank. Its odd for the pump to be bad on an 02. My cav. has 173,000 miles with the original clutch & original fuel pump.

  3. yes you will have to remove the tank from under the car and it is under the seat, under the floor. it's tough and I'd drain the tank before doing it.

  4. It's very common for fuel pump failure for that particular car, we've changed hundreds at my shop. You do need to drop the tank as you wont be able to do anything under the back seat. I would make sure you get a Delco fuel pump so you dont have to do it again in six months. Stay away from autozone fuel pumps.

  5. In a Cavalier its in the tank, dont know why but Cavalier fuel pumps fail more often than any other make I ever came across.
