How do I get video from dv camcorder to hp laptop?

There is no place for a dv cord to plug in on my laptop, and my usb cord only transfers audio.

  1. You have HP laptop without FireWire? I do have one, bought last August and it does have FireWire.

    It is really bad luck if you did not think about this before.

    I don't know your HP but my one does not have older port so called PCMCIA. If your one does have this port, you can buy PCMCIA FireWire card, something like this:

    If you do not have PCMCIA port, then you need conversion cable, something like this:

    Or sell the laptop and get a new one:-)

  2. If you have a mini dv (cassette) camcorder….

    Your dv camcorder needs a firewire connection (ieee 1394) in order to download video, your laptop probably did not come with a firewire port, so you will have to buy one and install it, since most computers (except possibly brand new) don't come with a firewire port, your camcorder did not come with a firewire cord so you have to purchase a cord too. Your camcorder did come with a USB cord and that is used for downloading stills from your camcorder. Make sure your camera is in playback mode.

    Make sure your laptop has an empty bay for the firewire card.
