  1. Try the tried and true OXICLEAN..Can't miss!!

  2. What kind of stain is it? Water stains are not usually stains in the sense of something has been added to the fabric but rather they are clean spots where wetness has moved materials from the center to the edges of the stain. Water stains are very very hard to remove from fabric, especially fabric that cannot be washed.

Is it a stain from chlorine? (kind of whitish around the edges.) Dab the edges with distilled water to pick up the chlorine and feather out the edge to make it less noticeable.

Is it actually a clean spot? (Center of the stain is light colored with a darker ring at the outside.) You can try to feather the edges with distilled water but best bet would be to have the whole sofa cleaned.

I have had very good luck with washing sofa cushion covers that have zippers.

First, test for color fastness by wetting a white cloth and wiping and inconspicuous spot. If color comes off, do not wash the covers. If no color shows up, they may be okay to wash.

Second, remove the cover and re-zip the zipper. Use a safety pin to make sure the zipper stays put. Wash in a machine on gentle in cold water. Use 1/4 the detergent you would use for clothes.  Once they have rinsed and spun out, put the washer to spin a second time, no water.

Third,(the tricky part!) Put your cushion into a large garbage bag with the front of the cushion facing up. Now squeeze out all the air you can possibly get. Hold the bag shut and stuff the whole thing into the damp cushion cover. Release the bag opening and allow the cushion to expand as you push it into place. Gently pull the bag out. Zip up the cushion cover and let it air dry.

I did all the cushions on my sectional this way after my toddler liberally "painted" the cushions with red licorice. (1/2 of a standard Twizzler will cover 12 sea foam green cushions!) After a wash and air dry, it was good as new. The cushion covers seemed to shrink a tiny bit but they stretched right back out as they dried.

  3. I hope there is no chlorine in the water because that may affect the dye.  Let it dry thoroughly then use a brush to work the fabric all in the same direction.
