How do I give a picture a silhouette effect?

If you dont know what I mean heres an example..

  1.      Hi, I know how to silhouette items but I also use Microsoft Powerpoint too.  It isn't the official way to do it but it is a way none the less.

        Once Powerpoint is opened, just click "view" and click "toolbars" and find "picture."  While your picture is highlighted, click on the "color" button(black and white color strips). Then go to "black and white."  You can adjust how drastic you want it to look by using the "Contrast" and "Brightness" toolbars.  

         You can then copy and past it into Photoshop 7.0 and color in the empty white spots if you would like.  I personally find it a cooler effect by leaving it as is.
