How do I go about adopting my niece?

My brother inlaw is in jail and his girlfriend is on drugs and has been gone for 4 weeks. Girlfriends mother is wanting to take custody but I have been keeping the baby since she has been gone these 4 weeks. She has been turned in to DSS for abandoment. What do I need to do now. I Need Help!

Get an attourney first of all then he will explain what all will happen and then you keep the baby away from the person who wants custody the g friends mom and then the lawyer will tell you everything  u need to know

i think you should get a lawyer and make a case becuz this is kinda what happend to my cousins daugher her parents just keft her wit my sister and my sis got custudie sorry for my spelling im kinda sleepy

Get a good family law attorney...they know what to file in court....for temporary custody until fulltime custody can be arranged.

You have to normally wait three months b4 they will place the child with a permanent guardian and thats the first step. Talk to a attorney in your area and they can file for a emergency custody incase the mother trys to come back or the mothers mother trys to take the child. Every state is different. Good luck!
