  1. All that is required is a GED or high school diploma.  However, some departments set their standards higher.

Where to start?  Contact your local police department, they should have a recruitment officer or someone in personnel that can inform you of their standards and what the next step is for you.

    Apply.

  2. Dont listen to the guy above me. He knows nothing.

Start by going to your countys Sheriffs office and ask their for some kind of pamphlet or form for the POST academy. Take their test and see if you get accepted into the academy.

good luck, ps no college background is required thats just a plus

  3. I would suggest attending college if at all possible. College will allow you to be more selective about what departments you can apply for. College will also help you get promoted after you are hired. Some departments pay their officers more if they have a degree. You should visit the websites of whatever departments you are interested in. Most larger departments have websites with detailed information about qualifications required, how to apply, and the hiring process. If you can not find the information, simply call the department and ask them. Check out http://www.peaceofficerjobs.com for excellent information about how to get a law enforcement officer job.

  4. Go to cop school.

  5. College is not required at many departments, but it is becoming more and more common.

Most larger departments will post hiring information on their website and/or have recruiters you can call. They will give you all the information you need.

  6. If you ever have thought about the military, go in it.....

If you ever thought and can get into college, go in it....

If either of these options seems unreasonable then maybe you should rethink your future.  Many departments want at least one of these two aspects and outlooks.

Policing takes leadership skills...they take fresh persons out of high school rarely but moreover they search for people that have already taken the lead and have shown the maturity level needed to complete the task.

So, just know that when the doors close to the interview room you will be left with who you are and what you have experienced...they will ask you why they should hire you as a police officer and wait for your answer...what will you say?

  7. Larger departments have recruiters, you could start there. If that doesn't work, most departments have web sites. They commonly include information on recruiting.
