Who do I contact to set it up? Is it possible to get a preference of whether the counsellor is male or female? Its basically for depression and self-esteem.

Thanks.

  1. Call your county's Social Services and ask them what's available in your area; especially if you have no insurance, you'll want something that's based on a sliding scale (charged according to income).

You can also check the yellow pages of the phone book under Counselors and Therapists.

  2. If you are interested in counseling, going to your general practitioner is a good start. If you know anyone who has been to a counselor, ask them if they know of someone they would recommend. Some counselors need direct referrals from a medical professional, others prefer you to call them directly. Generally hospitals have counseling centers, and they could have a listing of counselors in your area. You can absolutely have a preference between male and female. It's also important to have a good connection with your counselor. It's hard to work through things with someone if you don't trust (or even like!) them. Best of luck!

  3. Find a local Mental Health Center or clinic near you.

Some hospitals have a Department of Psychiatry where you can get treatment.  You can choose whether you want to see a male or female counselor.  Good Luck and get some help so you can start to feel better.

  4. WELL IM FROM USA BUT YOU CAN CALL ANY DR AND THEY WILL REFER SEVERAL NAMES. ALSO IF YOU DONT FEEL COMFORTABLE WITH YR THERAPIST THEM ASK FOR ANOTHER OR GO TO DIFFERENT OFFICE THERAPIES IS ONLY AS GOOD AS YOUR THERAPIST. YOU HAVE TO BE ABLE TO RELAX AND TELL THEM ANYTHING.BUT IF YOU FEEL DEPRESSED THEY HELP YOU SORT THINGS OUT IN YOUR HEAD AND GIVE YOU WAYS AND MEDS TO HELP. ALL THIS TAKES TIME THERE IS NO MIRACLE CURE, BUT PRAYING DOES HELP AND ACCEPTING YOUR HIGHER POWER INTO YOUR HEART TO HELP LIGHTEN YOUR LOAD HELPS ALOT GOOD LUCK

  5. doctor

  6. There are many ways to get connected with a counselor or therapist. You can talk to your doctor, a clergy person, or a friend. You can also look in the yellow pages of the phone book. If you are in a community with a mental health center, you can call there as well.

Before you start calling, there are a few things to think about. You mentioned gender, decide if that matters to you. Then fees, if they bill insurance or this doesn't matter, how much they charge. Is crisis intervention is important to you? If you need to, is location important? If anything else is important, think about it so you can ask when you call.

When you start making calls, ask your questions on the phone. If someone seems to fit your criteria, then you can make a first appointment.

Make sure that you are comfortable once you have your first appointment. You will need to be open and honest with the therapist if you want to make it worth your time and effort. Otherwise you will be wasting every ones time.

Some people will suggest that you go to a psychiatrist instead of a counselor/therapist. A psychiatrist is a doctor who is trained in mental illness, they can prescribe medications. Because of their busy schedules, most will only do very short periods of therapy if any at all. I do not recommend going to a psychiatrist first. Going to a therapist first will allow them to get a bigger picture of you and your situation which will allow a psychiatrist more information to decide which if any medications are right for you. Many people do not need medication, working on issuses will help them more and for a life time where medication helps when you take it.

I hope that all of this helps. If you want more information you can let me know.

    Best wishes!
