How do I go about filing taxes for previuos years if I don't have my past w-2s?

  1. Visit your local IRS office  and request the W2 transcripts and they will print them while you wait, take your photo ID.

    IF your received a letter from the IRS requesting you to file the returns, call the number listed on the letter and they will send you the W2.  

    Or download Form 4506-T and mail to appropriate address and the transcript will be mailed to you in 20-30 days


  2. Use form 4506-t to get the irs copy.  If your state has an income tax, you will need to contact the employer to get a copy.

  3. Simply call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040 and ask for income transcripts for the years that are needed.  This will provide you with all the federal information only, though.  If you live in a state that has an income tax and are required to file a tax return for your state, you'll want to obtain your w-2's from your previous employer(s), else you'll need to assume no withholding for your state income tax.
