How do I go about finding out what air conditioner is the right size for my house?

  1. Measure the cubic footage of the area that you intend to condition and take that to the store or HVAC contractor. If you are getting a whole house system, the HVAC guy will do the recommended sizing for you.


  2. If it is central air all the contractor will tell you. For single room with 15'x15' you can run with 5000BTU to 8000BTU. Electrical in the house will be an issue. You should have the separate line for the ac. If not the ac will run but not full potential also you may have to go flip the circuit breaker often during the ac in use. (Also use power that way)

  3. For central A/C let some HVAC contractors come out and give you a quote. They should do a heat gain calculation to determine the size.

    Sizing of window units can be obtained by contacting an appliance dealer.

    It depends on how hot it gets in your area but an average of 500 square feet per 12,000 BTU.

  4. Usualy the box will tell you how much space it will cool but it usualy runs about 5000btu's per 200 ft sq(8 ft cieling.
