Question:

How do I go about fitting a carpet to a long, narrow hallway?

If it was simply a narrow hallway there'd be no problem but it has 'square' areas at each end which are not of the same size.

I've been advised that, with the hall's measurements, I'll need a 16x12 carpet but the main hallway is only just over three feet wide.

There are also Lots of doorways that need to be considered too!

Has anyone done anything similar?

How did you go about it?

  1. Measure the area you want to carpet, then cut that size from the roll but make it about 8 inches wider in length and width. Then lay it in the hallway and cut off any excess to make it fit.

  2. Oh my god, I have the best answer for you.  Do you have the carpet already???  Assuming that you don't, here's what you do.  Measure the widest part of the hallway, go to Home Depot or Lowe's and look at the carpet they sell on rolls.  Some of it is cheap looking but some of it is really doable.  You can buy it for around $3 per foot.  You can buy the entire runner for your hallway for less than $10. Cut to fit and dispose of the rest or recycle it into door mats or dog beds.

  3. Call in a professional carpet installer, it'll be worth it!

  4. If you have never done this before the easiest way, and the way to give the most professional look, is to make a paper template first.

Use brown wrapping paper or even newspaper.

Having got your template then lay it on the carpet and cut (maybe an inch over at the edges) then carpet on floor and trim the edges to size with carpet scissors or Stanley knife

  5. It would take a carpet fitter no time at all to do this job and it will look great and not cost much, could be a lot cheaper than you making a mistake and ruining the carpet.
