How do I go about getting a "doing business as" (DBA).

I want to start an online business but was told I need a DBA to open a business bank account and get a seller's permit.

~~I don't know where you live so I can only tell you about California. We go to our Hall of Records, fill out a short form, then you check through the DBA's on file (can do this online too). If yours is not taken, you pay the fee-they give you the paperwork. It has to published once or twice in a public newspaper to be finalized. It's very simple.~~

Honestly all you need to do is file a business name while applying for your business license (which you would definitely want to do first) with your county or state (If from the U.S.). It could be a simple name such as John Doe & Company or JD, Co.
