How do I go about getting an internship with a police department?

im not old enough to become a police yet but i want to start working with them.

  1. I was required to do an internship during my college years, basically find a few departments you are interested in and call them to see if they offer internships or would consider letting you do one. If you plan to do it during the summer like a lot of people do, I would advise you to start making calls between January - March as most internships will start in May or June and last 1-2 mo.

    It's important to get an early jump on it because there could be other students asking the same agency and a lot of agencies only allow one student to be an intern while others do let multiple students, it just depends. Also, be prepared for a background check to be done as well, because as a student intern you will be around confidential info.

  2. You may want to see if the department you are interested in has an explorer program as well. This can be a good start for a young person. I know the department I was in hired past explorers when they were old enough to serve.

  3. Those assignments are normally reserved for students of a criminal justice program.

    You would have to call the department and see if they offer a program.
