I am going with a few friends at the end of the year on a volunteer project to work with animals. Thing is its a bit expensive and I am looking at getting any help with funding I can. How do I go about approaching local businesses or groups for sponsership, am I right to be asking for sponsership in this situation? What other ways can I go about raising money for the trip.

  1. I have raised a lot of money over the years, and the best way is to go to businesses and tell them you story, and ask.  They would much rather give someone money who is trying to do good in their life than pay taxes to keep criminals in jail for drugs etc.  Business men and women love it when they see someone young doing something good for the sake of good deeds, and helping others and animals.  It's really easier than you think.  Also, you can have bake sales or ask people for an item to sell on e-bay.  That's a great fund raiser.  The best time to sell on e-bay is in the fall and winter when more people are at their computers.  It's also the Christmas buying season.  Only sell in the summer if you are selling summer items, such as summer clothes, lawn mower blades, hedge trimmers, leaf blowers, in other words, things people would need in the summer.  Good luck and stay with it.  Open a savings account and put every check in it.  It will give you a sense of accomplishment, and you will be surprised how quickly it will grow.

  2. Before you start to ask others for money, I would suggest making up a letter that explains what the money is being used for, the purpose of the project and what you expect to gain from the experience. This lets people understand your purpose for wanting to help and know that their money is being put to good use. Then write out all the addresses of the local businesses in town and either send them a letter or visit them in person with your letter. Visiting in person is probably your best approach when dealing with a business. Also send letters to family and friends. Ask your church if you could set up a donation box so that church members can help donate.
