My daughter is 4, she won't be 5 until Nov. The cut off date here is Sept. 30 to go to kindergarden. They denied her application for pre-k stating that she was "too smart" and only kids who need that early education can go. its frustrating & a little offensive to say that she is not as mature as other children born in the same year, just earlier, because my bday is Nov 12, I started kindergarden at 4 and I did very well. I don't want to hold her back when she already knows how to add, subtract, write, spell certain words, her colors, and the list goes on. I want to home school her but i dont know how. I live in Virginia.

  2. I started homeschooling my son in kindergarten. We chose to "virtual charter school."  There are several different options to chose from, but k12 has the best curriculum I've encountered.  They all have different age requirements than traditional "brick-and-mortal" schools, so check each one to know for sure. In our situation, my son's birthday fell late, but had I known about this option, he could have started a whole year sooner.  The virtual charter schools send you all the supplies and materials you need...even your student a computer to use for free.  If you want more freedom in selecting the curriculum, the school district you live in should have an "intent form" for all home schoolers to fill out.  It simply lets them know your intention for schooling your child at home.  This resolves any legal issues before they come a problem.

  3. There are different procedures for each state.  You can look up your state department of education and they will list homeschool regulations. This site should be helpful -  http://www.vahomeschoolers.org/

However, for a 4 yr old, there should be no need to do anything this year.  Even states with strict regulations don't require anything before mandatory school age.

For what its worth, my daughter also had a b-day a little past the deadline.  We are starting our 5th year of hs and it has been great!

Have fun with your little girl!
