Question:

How do I go about homeschooling my daughter?

I want to begin homeschooling my daughter in the fall. She didn't do well in public school. We tried a private Christian school and that didn't work for her either. So I have decided to homeschool. I live in New Jersey. What are the first steps that I need to take in getting started? I heard somewhere that I should just send a letter to the superintendent of schools and let him know that I want to homeschool my daughter. Also, is there someone that I need to contact with her progress throughout the year? I am so new at this so any help would be greatly appreciated. I don't want to know whether or not I should homeschool. That is not what I'm asking. I have already decided to homeschool.

  1. Here are the laws for NJ:

Then contact your state/local homeschooling group(s).  There are probably NJ HS'ing groups on Yahoo.

I would recommend attending a HS convention, and also finding out your DD's learning style - obviously it's not the "B&M" seatwork method. :-)

Then research methods and curricula that fit her learning style.

  2. I think it's great that you've decided to homeschool.  Here's a list of requirements different states use to make up their homeschool laws:

You can find a summary of the laws for your state here:

NJ is a great state to live in with few regulations.  Since your dd was already in private school, I don't think you'll need to send a letter to the superintendent, but read the laws and see what they say.

I think the next step for you would be to find out your dd's learning style.  Maybe that will give you a clue as to why school wasn't working for her, and also help you find out what will work for her.  Here is some information on learning styles:

Here is some information on different homeschooling methods you could look into, along with links to sources of other info:

I think it would also help you to join a local support group for information and support for you, and activities for your daughter.

    Good luck!

  3. well first of all im guessing u teach her stuff like math or sumthin like that

  4. Look into Waldorf homeschooling curriculum. There is a lot of stuff online. It has a very holistic approach. The link below is a good place to find curriculum samples.
