Hey all, I have been taking Wado Ryu Karate for about 4 years now and I am currently 1st brown belt and working towards black belt in the future. Anyway, from witnessing the Tai Chi performance on TV last night (from the Beijing Olympics) I became highly interested in learning more behind it as a result, and wish to take it up.

I have heard there are great benefits, spiritually and mentally. But how would I go about starting? I am unaware of what stances I need to do and such. Is it necessary to be trained from a teacher or is it possible to teach yourself? Thanks for any help on this matter.

  1. You will need to train under a Good teacher, be prepared for many years of study.

    Go to

  2. Find a qualified instructor. Be prepared for many, many years of study and practice.

  3. The show on the Beijing Olympics is not totally traditional Tai chi as "visual effect" is highly concern.

To learn Tai Chi, you must find a teacher first.

Read a book may also help.

  4. you will never be able to teach yourself the secrets of tai chi, and it must be taught by a credible sifu with strong lineage.

start by finding a teacher that is willing to teach you the full art; and avoid people teaching "only the healing side" or "only the martial arts side".

many people cannot handle the slow pace of tai chi, but it is actually a highly reformed method of exercised, it takes a lot more strength to do things slowly, and takes a lot more skill to gain the correct sensitivity that is needed for effective combat. moving slow is just one aspect of the style. do not miss the forest behind the trees.

tai chi is something that requires dedication. but its worth it

  5. club or academy
