  1. Firstly, do you have citizenship of the United Kingdom, or some other European Union country? This is generally the case if one of your parents is British/Irish/French/German etc.

If you don't have European Union citizenship, and you intend to come to London to work, or to live permanently, you will need to apply for some sort of working visa or permanent residency visa, and they aren't given out like candy.

Another option is a student visa, if you intend to study in London.

However, if you want to stay in London for three months or less, and don't intend to work while you're here, then you don't need a visa for that. Just buy your ticket, bring your passport, pack your things and come.

You may need more than $5000 to support yourself for 3 months though. London is super-expensive.

  2. what is your profession? they have a points system for immigration. You can't just pick up and move to the UK. Americans think they can just move to england, and are surprised to find out they can't.

at immigration at heathrow , if you are under 25 years old, you will be scrutinized.

    they will want to know:

if you have at least 2000 dollars

a charge card with a large available balance

    your itinerary

they will ask you "your destination" and if you are the least bit vague or if you hesitate, you will be hauled off to a private room where you will be interrogated. edited to add: if you say "I'm going to find work in a pub", you will be sent back without further question (how do i know this? happened to a friend of mine)

ask to see your return ticket home

there is a huge problem in the uk with young americans living "rough" on the street (leicester square) They overstayed their time and won't or can't go home.

if you really want to go you can get a tourist holiday maker 6 month visa, where they will let you work and stay for 6 months and then you have to go home.

if you really want to live there, become an engineer or medical doctor.

  3. Hi! I'm moving there in 2 weeks and 1 day! It was a bit of a long process. First you need your passport. then you'll need a working Visa, which cost me $500AU for which you need $4500AU in your bank at least.

I organised a nanny job already, which many provide live in accomodation, which is great, because the cost of living in London is very very expensive, so I'd recommend you had a place to go and a job to go to when you get there, because that amount of money won't support you for very long?

If you look on the web, there are quite a few agencies that set foreigners up with jobs and rooms in pubs etc, you have to pay to use them, but they can also help you out with info about what type of Visa you'll need?

I think with that amount of money you'd possibly be able to get a working Holiday Visa, but I don't think they'd let you move there permanently with that much, I think you'd have to have 5 times that and have a specialised job or something....

    Anyway..... Good Luck!

  4. Why do you want to move to London?  London is very expensive and dreary; I know because I used to live there.
