Question:

How do I go about obtaining my teacher's certification in the state of Florida?

I am currently obtaining a B.A. in English at the University of Central Florida. I am aware I will probably have to wait until after I graduate to apply for my certification; however, I would like to know what "road map" I should make for myself, and what hurdles I will need to jump through in order to get my certification for elementary education.

What can I expect while applying for my certification?

What other qualifications besides my B.A. in English will I need?

How long will it take until I can legitimately start applying for teaching positions in schools?

Thanks!

  2. You should be working hand in hand with the Board of Education and the state board while you are obtaining your degree.  Your courses should have been built upon your desire for accreditation and certification.  You will probably have to take a test (Praxis) in the subject area and once you have passed receive your certification.  There are no hurdles to jump through if you have done your homework.  Depending upon the courses you took, you are either prepared to teach elementary, middle or high school classes.   As soon as you have passed your exams, you should start submitting your resume to schools of your choice to be considered for hire.  Check with the schools (usually you can find this information online) who have vacancy positions.  Also, you might start out by substituting to learn your way around the different districts.   It's good to get a school in the area in which you live. Good luck to you.
