  1. In one week you will only have time for Tokyo and Kyoto, and may prefer to just visit one of them.  If you go to just Tokyo, take day trips to Kamakura and Nikko to see a more traditional side of Japan.  If you go to Kyoto you may want day trips to Himeji, Nara, and Osaka.

You really only need (1) your flight to Japan, (2) hotel arrangements, and (3) maybe a train ticket between Tokyo and Kyoto.

You don't need (1) a tour, (2) a rental car - there is excellent public transportation, or (3) massive advance planning - just get Lonely Planet or another good guidebook for Japan.

  2. 1., research as much as you can about Japan.

2.Then, choose 10 or so locations and attractions you might want to visit.

3.Figure out where you want to stay, youth hostel, ryokan, budget hotel, luxury hotel, temple etc.

4.Know how much you are willing to spend on food, accommodations, travel and souvenirs.

    5. Whittle the 10 destinations down according to your travel plan.

    6. Make sure you have your travel documents in order: Passport, flight ticket and itinerary.

    7. Pack as little as possible in a backpack on wheels.

    8.  Do NOT take a Western-sized suitcase with you; it is virtually impossible to find a locker that accommodates these.

    9. Instead, Make sure to include an empty backpack. This is in case you end up with more presents and souvenirs than you left home with. It also has the advantage of not having to wait in line for an hour or more at the luggage claim carousel.

    10. If you stay at least 7 days, counting from the day you arrive, and are going to do some traveling, make sure to purchase an exchange voucher for a Japan Railpass at an authorized travel agency near you.

This will save you lots of money, and allows travel on the Shinkansen(except Nozomi), all JR buses and local trains, as well as the ferry to Miyajima.

11.. Take this voucher to Japan with you, and exchange it at a Midori-No-Madoguchi ticket office at an airport or train station.

  3. If you got the whole week, 7 days, to spend holiday in Japan, you got  2 options. 1st, you can have a tailor made holiday (go to Japan Travel Bureau nearer and show them your budget, how many days, and places you want to go in Japan, then they will provide you all the info, tickets, hotels, package....) BUT choosing this first options means lots of cash involved....and less places...

2nd, how about planning a backpack in Japan. Less budget; and believe me, 7 days is enough to backpack the whole Sakura Land.  You have to do some research on the internet... still, you can got all the info you need, such as JR Rail Pass or air ticket to Japan from Japanese travel agency nearby. **Japan Travel Bureau is Japan biggest travel agency. Its got travel agency, offices all over the world, with 4~8 branch in 1 country.
