I am active duty Military and I am stationed in VA. My home of residency is NJ. I really would like to register my car in NJ instead of VA. I just wanted to know if anyone has done something similiar like this and if so, how did you go about doing it?

  1. If you are financing the vehicle the finance company can do it for you. If you are not financing it just contact the NJ DMV at 609-2926500. Just make sure you have a military DL, original title and proof of insurance. You should be able to register any vehicle in any state because you are in the military... cool ha!

  2. First thing is it will have to be registered in the State in which it was purchased. That's usually State law (residency restrictions, taxes and all that). Plus you will need to have whatever Insurance the State requires. Once you move to your State of new residence you will then have to re-register the car in that State again with that States required minimum insurance requirements at the least, once again State Law.

Once your vehicle is registered in your new State you will then need to contact your Insurance agent or company and give them all your new information. Don't be surprised if your insurance increases. Different States have different requirements and different limits as well as Insurance companies use different actuary tables for each State each City and in some cases even zip code.

  3. go to your title dept in va and tell them your Military and live in nj there s a way its done all the time.

  4. Did you just buy the car or are you re-registering it?  If you are re-registering it, you should be able to do it online and have the stickers sent to you.  We have VA tags and have always kept them when living in other states.  We usually receive a bill in the mail to remind us and we can either mail it in or do it online.  I do not know if you just bought the car.

I just saw that you updated your info, since you are military (as we are) you should register it in VA because since your residency is in NJ you won't have to pay personal property taxes on the vehicle.  It is not illegal though, we have always kept VA tags wherever we have lived and it has never been an issue, and I knew of lots of people that would drive down to NC to buy their cars so they wouldn't have to pay certain fee's.  But, like I said, if you bought the car here I don't know if there is anything you can do other than to go there and change it.

  5. it's illegal to do so

  6. I was in the AF and did the same thing. You may have to wait until you come home again to do it unless your plates are already NJ. If you do have NJ plates then you can renew online. It is totally legal to keep you home state plates if you are active duty stationed elsewhere.
