I'm looking to spend 500-700$ a month in rent and I know i'm not going to be living in the suburbs or anything but I need help finding a decent apartment. & I would appreciate some tips on how to get started and how to get prepared. ANY help AT ALL would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  1. that doesn't seem like much at all leftover.  my mortgage is about a thousand and with all my other bills i spend about 200 on electic and water, about a 100 on cable and internet, 100 on insurance, 50 on phone, and 200 on bike.  that's about 650 a month.  that doesnt include gas or food or going out.

it's a big thing to get your own place.  when i moved out of the dorms on base i got my own house and the military gives you housing allowance but you no longer have furniture or anything.  it cost a lot of money getting all the things i needed for my house.  also, it sucked at first when i didn't have a washer and dryer.  you probably need to get a roommate and save for a deposit because most places require one.

  3. Some apartments will charge you more for a six month lease as opposed to a year lease.  You have to research quite a bit and compare.  Ask about move in specials! Some apts. will pay more bills than others.  Make sure that you have a washer and dryer...laundromats are gheettttto!!!  Make sure you visit the apartment during the day and night.  Make sure there is adequate parking; some places will charge you for parking.  If you are bold and are serious about the apartment, knock on the doors of the neighbors in order to get an impression.  Ask residents there who are checking their mail.  Good luck!!!
