Question:

How do I go about researching Scottish and Welsh ancestry?

I've been able to trace my ancestry back to Scotland and Wales in 1756 (a man from Wales married a lady from Scotland), but I'm unsure how to proceed farther back. I'd prefer not to have to pay a website fee. Any suggestions?

  1. I don't know about free on all sites but here are a few sites that might help. the scottish peoples site is fantastic, but there is a small cost when it comes to specific research but the certificates are immediately available on the Internet.

    www.familysearch.org; www.scotlandspeople.com; http://www.genealogylinks.net/uk/wales/i...

    Good Luck

  2. For researching hard to find records or looking for information in other countries, I go to google books.

www.google.com, look for the drop down menu at the top and select books, then put in the last name you are searching. To narrow down the search you can put in other words, like Scotland, or the area they are from, etc.

  3. If you wish to progress further back than the date of commencement of Statutory Registrationin Scotland ( Jan 1855 ) you can use the Mormon / LDS Family Search site www.familyserach.com which has the old parish registers transcribed ( not a prime source so be careful of transcription errors of which threre are plenty ! ) Family Search for Scotland unlike England covers up to 1876 ( England halts at 1837 wheb their SR started) Free Cen and Free BMD are good for both Scotland and Wales . Scotlands People at £6 for 30 hits is good value for money and Scottish OPRs are now digitised and can be downloaded .
