Question:

How do I go about seeing a psychiatrist and being diagnosed?

I've been reading about psychiatrists being covered by OHIP. Then I read about needing a referral though from a GP. I don't have a doctor right now though. I've been deeply depressed and would like to start seeing a psychiatrist but I'm not sure what the process is. Do I need a referral? Do psychiatrists only deal with prescriptions or do they talk you through problems too? How long would it take me to be diagnosed with something and start a treatment?

Sorry for all the questions just nervous and not sure what to do.

  1. In the u.s. you would need a referral unless you go bonkers and get into a psych ward then you're given one automatically The psychiatrist I see only and as far as I know deals only with meds some psychs do therapy but that seems rare. You may need both a psychiatrist and a psychologist. It's not how long it takes it's if they can give you an accurate diagnoses. I've been diagnosed as a psychotic nos to bipolar to schizoaffective and to finally psychotic depressive. So they change their diagnoses alot unless you have a clear cut case. They will usually give you a mental health screening and will probably start you on meds the same day if the need is warranted. Good luck!

  2. Call your local Mental Health Office. They will tell answer all your questions.

  3. Get the appointment!

  4. You can call your local mental health clinic and refer yourself, having a GP refer you just makes the process all that much faster. First you will need to meet an intake worker, that will assess your needs. Psychiatrists, are the usually the ones who perscribe the meds and can diagnos you. You can also request to see a psycologist as well, their job is to talk you through it all, and help you with negative thinking and such.  My advice is start with calling mental health, and work from there.
