How do I go about starting a record label?

Me and some friends have recently started a website (xaphan.us)dedicated to electronic dance music and have been streaming live DJ mixes. We are still extremely small with barely any listenership, and I would like to start a record label. But don't even know where to start. I think the obvious would be to start promoting like mad, but I am not sure what would be the best and most successful way of promoting in order to turn this into a business rather than a hobby. Should I get a trademark on our name? Any advice on how to go about this in more of a business manner rather than just a side project for fun. I know in the beginning, I will have to spend money to get it up and running. I am Lost and don't know where to start.

First, think of a name for you label.  A record label is just like starting other business.  First you come up with a name and register it and begin promoting yourself.

As long as you know how to make the music and get it on CD or record or other ways that you want to distribute it, that's the basics.

1st get rid of the forum. When people start by your site and see nothing on the forum they don't see you as reliable experts. Replace the forum link with someone else's already used forum that you can add your own thread too. This way you can participate in that forum, and give your community as it builds up someplace worth participating in their stick around.

Now are you looking into a record label really??? Or turn your pocasting into a monetization formula? For the podcasting look for advertisers you can place into the feed is an option. You can also set-up affiliates for your main Website. Or even an online store such as Netvalar.com sign up at netvalar.net. Tons of options for that.

Next thought is community and interaction from said community. Set-up at least 3 social networks built around your podcast. 1 would obviously be Myspace (so pase yet still vital) then hit up http://www.digfoot.com/ to find 2 more that fit your style. Use Twitter as an online message format, you can see any message sent to you rather you follow them or not and respond.

Now interaction run regular contests that your community can participate in. For example set-up a twitter alert via http://tweetbeep.com/ and reward the most tweets by 1 person about your podcast. Set-up rules that make it harder to game, for example all tweets must be about a different aspect of your podcast.
