Question:

How do I go about starting my pool and keeping nice water?

We are getting ready to fill our new pool with water from our own well. We have a water softener and in the past we noticed that the chemicals turn the water red for about 2 weeks, until the filter gets it clean. We have a larger pool that will be set up all year now and I am looking for some advice on what to use for nice clear water and something not to expensive. Any advice on pool maintenance in general is greatly appreciated! Thank you!

  2. I would use chlorine. Also make sure to get a water vacuum to clean the bottom of the pool and a net to get the leaves and stuff on the top of the water.

  3. Get some clorine and cemicals. But cemicals in about once a week. Make shure you sweep it and get all the bugs out often! Thats what keeps our pool nice and clean!!

  4. shock it and put clorine in it about everyday.and don't forget to  get a filter and a filter for in the winter, and try to get in it everyday because it keeps you active and the bottom of the pool clean.

  6. You need chemicals in your pool or it will turn green!

usually 1 bag of shock every week for maintence & 3-4 tablet every 3 days to purify the water. Your pump needs to stay on at least 7 hrs. a day. They should have given you direction when they installed your pool! Call your local pool store if you bump into any problems, they can talk you thru it & can test your water!

  7. First- BEFORE YOU FILL FROM A WELL- have the water tested- pH, TA, CH, and metals. Well water often contains high calcium levels and stain producing minerals- these minerals could be causing the red you see (manganese). Get it tested for iron, copper, and manganese. If these are present and your CH is 300+ I would strongly advise you to consider having water trucked in.

Chemicals you need at the cheapest price:

Chlorine- you can use regular unscented 6% clorox bleach. It contains the same active ingredient as chlorinating liquid (sodium chloride). The only difference is chlorinating liquid is 12%.

pH increaser- 20 mule team borax found in the laundry detergent aisle

ph decreser- muriatic acid- found at any hardware store in gallon jugs

TA increaser- regular arm and hammer baking soda

    TA decreaser- muriatic acid

CH increaser- calcium chloride- found at home depot/lowes

CYA- cyanuric acid- only time you may need to go to the pool store

Make sure you get a good liquid test kit. I use the Taylor K 2006. It is very accurate and reliable.
