How do I go about trading online on the LSE?

I'm interested in giving share trading a go, but I'm not sure where I need to sign up and what kind of bank account I need. Do I register on the LSE website, because the sign-up page doesn't ask anything about any bank credentials. Or do I sign-up at the bank where I have an account?
