Question:

How do I go from being a drilling reservist in the Navy to IRR?

I guess my question is, am I required to drill for a designated amount of time or can I just go into Admin and request to be put on a non-drilling status?

My 1st 4 years were active duty. I went directly into SelRes and was recalled 9 months after that. I was deployed for a year and have been drilling since- Im still in the 1st contract (hopefully that makes sense- I havent reenlisted) What Im not sure of though, is if when I signed the papers to go active reserve, if I agreed to not going IRR until the enlistment was up. I dont have a bonus or anything to worry about. My reserve enlistment is up Sept. 2009- so am I stuck until then or what?

Currently, Im a full time student and am worried about missing too many drills due to Saturday classes- so far, Ive missed 2 drill weekends this year and know for a fact Im going to miss 2 more- I dont want to get booted out for too many U/A's and I dont want to miss school either. Any advice is much appreciated.

  1. submit a "request chit" through your chain of command requesting a transfer to the IRR and list the reasons.

Thats all there is to it.
