  1. If you bought the apple/mac, return it for a PC based system.

  2. All OS X 10.5.x installations have Boot Camp software that allows direct installation of Windows XP or Vista. Pre-Leopard Intel-based Macs can use Boot Camp beta software which was once provided for free download by Apple but no longer available from them. You may be able to get it from some other source. Older Macs need emulation software as described below.

Parallels Desktop for Mac is a powerful, easy-to-use virtualization software for Intel-based Macs and is designed to work with a wide range of operation systems. VM Ware Fusion for Intel-based Macs is similar. Either costs about $80.

Virtual PC has been the software for emulating an Intel processor on a Mac for the past 10 years. It was developed originally by a company called Connectix and sold packaged with a Windows install CD. Microsoft bought Virtual PC from Connectix two years ago and discontinued it. You may still find discs of Virtual PC for sale on a dusty shelf somewhere. For a Power Mac G5 running OS X version 10.2.8 or later, you must use version 7.x of Virtual PC, also called Virtual PC 2004. For a PowerPC processor Mac with G4 or G3 processor, use Virtual PC version 6. Consult with the seller in detail about system requirements before you buy it. Virtual PC version 7 was also packaged with Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac Professional Edition so look for that if you can also use Office for Mac.
