I have never hung up curtains, but I want to hang up curtains in the bed room. Does it matter what kind of rod I use? Do I have to measure the window seal or what? I need help on what to buy.

This is my window seal

  1. You will need to measure from about an 1½" from the top of the molding to where ever you want the curtains to fall to.  This can be all the way to the floor and pooled or a few inches below the sill or just about anywhere in between.  You would also want to measure the width of the window as well, again adding at least an 1½ or more on both sides to allow clearance of the window.   When your curtains are open, you need plenty of room on the sides to allow stack back.

There are so many styles of rods and window treatment designs that your options are almost endless.  Here is a link to different styles for reference:

    A few curtain rod definitions:

cafe or curtain rods are for pocket curtains that are threaded onto the rod and moved manually

traverse rods are used for drapes that are attached using pins and have a pulley or baton system to open and close the drapes

decorative rods usually use some kind of clip or ring for movement or the curtains themselves have tab tops or grommets

  2. measure height ,width + info

    "Measuring the window width

Measure the length of the head casing-including any rosettes -and add 2 to 5" to the measurement. This extra width will ensure that the edges of the curtains won't be visible from outside. When shopping for window-treatment hardware, make sure the type you buy is adjustable to your final measurement."
