Question:

How do I help a hurt Basset Hound Dog?

I know a teenager that owns a Basset Hound and his foot/leg is injured and he does not know what to do. The teenager says his dad does not believe in Veterinarians and he is really worried about his dog. I asked him to bring his dog to my home so I could look at his foot in the light. When I looked at his foot I did not see anything noticeable, but this dog can't walk on his foot.

I am really worried about this dog and I am not financially able to help the dog. Is there anything I can do to get the dog help? I am able to transport him and do any foot work that needs to be done to help him.

Please help........

  1. Unfortunately the only sure thing you can do is take the dog to the vet unless you want to call the RSPCA (if you're in australia). They would take the dog though which I'm sure you'd like to avoid.

The next best thing is to call a vet and just ask for advice. They should be able to help you ascertain whether it is a sprain or something more serious. Also tell you how to bandage and further treat the foot.

If you can't do that, try bandaging the foot with a poultice. (Powdered charcoal with a little warm water to make it moist, shredded cabbage, or grated potato.) This will draw out any thorns, infection, glass, or anything else that may be in there. Good luck! Hope he is better soon, and good on you for helping. The world needs more people like you.

  2. If he's not putting his foot down, he may have something like a torn cruciate ligament that may need surgery; if your friend's dad won't even take him to the vet to have it looked at, I highly doubt he'd pay for that surgery.

It may sound odd, but you could try calling a basset hound rescue in your area and ask them where to go from here.  Perhaps they could offer some names and numbers for you to try.  It's a long shot, but what the heck, it can't hurt.

    Good luck--keep us posted.

  3. This is ABUSE.....

Call Animal Control and/or Police.  The police will get in contact with Animal Control for you.

  4. Call a humane shelter in your area and explain the problem to them. If they won't do anything, then try animal control or the police. It is abusive to refuse to get a dog the medical attention he needs.

  5. call the police or animal police that's abuse

  6. if the dog's owners refuse to take the dog to a veterinarian when it is clear the dog needs medical attention, you can call the police on the grounds of animal abuse. if they don't seek veterinary medical attention for the dog, it is considered neglect, no matter what their views about veterinarians are.

  7. take it to the vet or call animal control if the dad refuses to get it taken care of because thats animal abuse

  8. That's pretty serious!  I would ask an online vet what to do!  They would have the best suggestions!

  9. look for an animal welfare agency in your area who are willing to look at the dog for free.
