Question:

How do I help my 6 year old son control his talking in class?

My 6 year-old son was slow to talk. He spoke words and phrases until he was 2, then once he learned to form sentences he hasn't stopped talking. He talks from the moment he wakes up til the moment he falls asleep. He is very smart and enjoys explaining even the simplest ideas. He is in the GT (Gifted and Talented) program in school, but he's the only student that qualified, so he doesn't have anyone his own age to challenge thoughts with. He loves to read, which comes from me reading to him all his life.

The problem with him talking out in class is that he disrupts the class and prevents the other students from learning. He will tell me "I had my hand raised but my teacher won't call on me so I can talk." I explain that there are only certain times to talk because there are times we need silence to do our work. He's been in school since he was 3 and he loves school.

I'm just wondering if there are any other parents out there that have found a solution to the question I am posing.

  1. One swift paddle and an embarassment once is all he needs and I am sure he will remember not to do it again.  Quit wasting everyones time and energies.  Just do it.

  2. explain that the teacher has to call on other kids too to be fair to them...remind him that you are proud that he knows the answers and is willing to share but the kids have to take turns and it can't always be his turn at school like it is at home because the teacher has so many kids to listen to. tell him that during work times it is respectful to be quiet so others don't get distracted and mess up their work.

make sure he talks a lot at home.

it could be all about maturity and learning to share the speaking time. and his behavior is age appropriate for a 6 year old but he can learn to control it at this time also.

  3. Buy him some jerky or if he's vegetarian or vegan just get him some straws and ask his teacher if it's okay for him to chew the items in class and he won't talk because he'll be chewing and that makes him concentrate.

  4. Cut out his EFFIN tongue

  5. Time to introduce him to wee wee snipper

  6. I think you should tell him not to talk just cause he is in the GT class i dont care when i didnt stop talkin my momma washed my mouth out with soap and water and then if i didnt stop she wopped my butt. so there it is.

  7. Have you thought about finding an outlet after school for him to get all that talking out of his system? Maybe some sort of club or sport to use up that energy. My step daughter would get in trouble for singing while the teacher was conducting class but after a few time outs and discussions with her she is improving.

  8. Talk to hem about it.... sometimes you have to make up stuff like "The elves will give cole!, or God will punish you..."

  9. unplug his computer and tv until he get better
