Question:

How do I hide mouseover links in the bottom left hand corner of the browser?

I want to put links into my site but when the user puts the mouse over the link I don't want the link address to appear in the bottom left hand corner of the screen (so they don't know where they're being directed).

Nothing unethical, I just want the page to be prettier and the client web addresses to be kept more candid. How do i stop it showing on mouseover?

Cheers!

  1. You can't.  That's a function of the browser and a user controlled function to hide or show status bar at bottom of browser.  Any site that was able to hide links, I would ban them.

  2. http://google.com

  3. You don't. It's there for security. If you could do it, so could a phisher or scammer. It used to be possible to change it in IE6 only, by using JavaScript. You can't any more for that very reason.

If you want to conceal a link, try using a service like TinyUrl, that create an unreadable hash out of your link. But don't expect anybody to be clicking on your links if they don't know where they lead to.

But yet, you claim you want to make the URL look "prettier". Well, putting a different URL destination in status bar (or even using TinyURL) wouldn't help you anyway, since the real URL will be displayed in the address bar when the page loads anyway.

If you want your URLs to be prettier, name your pages/directories better, or use server rewrites.
