How do I hide the sump pump in my basement?

I'm thinking about building a wall around it but I'm not sure how I should leave access to it. I'm also not sure if the wood would get moldy.

  1. I used a lid off a rubbermaid  tote. I cut a slot to the middle and cut a hole as big as the pipe. Good Luck!:{

  2. I put mine inside a big concrete culvert and built a lid out of wood for it.........and poured concrete all around it.........but you still need access in case the pump goes down. Mine was for fresh water so I had a line to the outside and sprayed the water on a lawn area.........in other words mine was not for sewage..............hope this helps

  3. Build a bench to set over it, it will be hidden but access will be simple.

  4. I assume you are not going to try and relocate the pump.

    A sump pump is intended to pull water out of a pit.  Usually there is only one pipe coming from the pit.  A sewage ejector is essentially the same thing except the pit is closed and a different pipe is used to supply air to the pit to take up the space formerly occupied by the water that is ejected from the sealed pit.  If your hiding configuration includes completely covering the pit you may have to add an air vent.

    Secondly you have to know how water is intended to "feed" the pit.  If you are trying to have surface water drain into the pit and then be pumped out you need to provide a way for this to happen.  (One clue is that the pump is in a low area of the otherwise solid floor.) If there is not a separate floor drain that feeds into the sump pump pit you can make one and a with a proper air vent attached to the pit completely seal the pit only allowing some provision for servicing the pump.  Otherwise you have to allow some other way for water to drain into the pit (cuts in the lid etc.)

    If the pump is intented to take away only subsurface water the bottem of the pit will be open ground or the pit will have pipes opening into it.  Here again you can simply seal off the pit without any provision for surface drainage but should allow an air intake.

    With the above provisions, "hiding" the pump has as many solutions as your imagionation can roam.  Keep in mind that "hiding" may not necessarily mean covering.  It could mean fooling the eye.  That can be done with paint,  decorations, or distractions.

    Try painting the piping the same color as the surrounding walls, putting something in front of it big enough to cast a shadow and reduce the lighting to the area.  Increase the lighting elsewhere and place a "feature" on the other side of the room.  But if it is still "featured" in your mind and it is truely annoying you may have no choice but to put it in jail and cover it up.

  5. Depends on how nice you want it to look.  First off you need access to it in case you have a problem.  Couple of ideas.... one... frame in an area around it with a door, (accessible and hidden).  two.... frame in the same area only 3 or so feet high with a removeable lid.  Make is strong enough and you could use it for storage or even a TV stand.  Whatever you use to frame it with... make is so it can be taken apart... use screws and other fasteners that are easy to remove.  Hope I helped
